Leighton Moss

Friday 5th May
I decided to have a trip out this morning and travelled through the Yorkshire Dales over the Pennines and to the Leighton Moss RSPB Nature Reserve near Morecambe Bay.The sun was shining with a temperature of 10°C with some wind keeping the temperature down.I got out of the car to the sound of a Chiffchaff then as I headed off to Allen Hide there was a Grasshopper Warbler reeling.I located it and soon after heard then saw a second bird. There were several Sedge Warblers in full voice and overhead I saw three Swifts, my first ones this year.
At the hide I counted 35 Avocets, but the stars of the visit were seven Spoonbills, not to mention a Great White Egret. Also here Black-tailed Godwit,Pintail,Shoveler,Shelduck and Teal. All the birds took to the air as a helicopter passed close by giving chance of some flight pictures.
I then went on to the main reserve picking up Marsh Harrier,Little Egret, Little Grebe, Blackcap, Willow Warbler, Gadwall,Great Black Backed Gull and several other common species.

  1. Cracking Spoonbill photos Nigel.
The blue background with the black and white of the bird looks ace.
Marsh Harrier and Warblers pics are pretty cool as well!
