Leeshaw

 Saturday 30th March a.m.

A sunny start with a temperature of 6°C, a good mix of birds at Leeshaw with a count of twelve Oystercatchers and a pair of Goosanders. There was also a pair of Dippers in the stream and a Grey Wagtail landed on the wall of the reservoir overflow.  Others seen were Curlew, Redshank, Lapwing, Canadas and Greylags.

On the way home briefly called in at Leeming Reservoir seeing two Grey Wagtails.

I then carried on to Trough Lane where I finally got my first Wheatear of the year, also seen were Curlew, Reed Bunting, Skylark and several Meadow Pipits.

Old Moor Nature Reserve

From Sunday 24th March a.m.

After my earlier visit to Swillington Ings I travelled to South Yorkshire and the RSPB Reserve Old Moor where the temperature had risen to 11°C.  Here there are several hides overlooking lakes where there were Cormorants, Oystercatcher, Gadwall, Pochard, Wigeon and Shoveler.  The highlight for me was a small flock of Redpolls.
