Local Walk,Trough Lane & Fly Flatts

Wednesday May 9th a.m
My dad had a day off work so did some birding this morning, with the hope of breaking our duck
and seeing our first Wheatear of the year. It was a bright sunny start to the day with a temperature
of 5°C as he set off taking the dog for a good long walk. He went down to Hallas Bridge then
through Goitstock Wood returning home along Halifax Road. Along the way seeing Chaffinch,
Goldfinch,Greenfinch,Grey Heron,House Martin,Blackcap,Willow Warbler,Pheasant,Swallow and
Wren. He saw some other common species as well as hearing Chiffchaff singing and two Mute Swans
flying low heading West over the village.
Next he went to Trough Lane near Denholme in search of our first Wheatear, he started well seeing
a Kestrel and soon after a Little Owl perched on an overhead wire. Then he spotted our first
Wheatear near an old stone wall, this was quickly followed by a second, at last. He also saw a
Reed Bunting also perched on a overhead wire.
Next up to Fly Flatts to round off a good morning who knows he might see a Ring Ouzel thats
been reported in this area, but that was not to be. He did see another five Wheatear though along
with Canadas,Curlew,Mallard,Meadow Pipit,Swallow and Lapwing. Down by the water he also
saw four Common Sandpiper our first of the year.
