Leighton Moss

Sunday 29th September a.m.
An early start this morning as we made our way over to Leighton Moss an RSPB reserve
on the West coast near Morecambe bay.The temperature was 12°C on our arrival with clear
skies & the sun beginning to break through. We started off with the hides overlooking the
lagoons next to the bay, seeing good numbers of Teal,Wigeon,Greylags,Gadwall,Black-tailed
Godwit & Redshank.There were a couple of Little Egrets,Greenshanks & Spotted Redshank,
we also saw Curlew,Shelduck,Grey Heron,Pied Wag & Cormorant. As we were watching
from the hide a wader began walking towards us at the edge of the lagoon in the mud, we
thought it was a Dunlin, but the other birders in the hide said it was a Curlew Sandpiper, I hope
they were right as this would be a first for us.

  1. Makes birding round here look silly

  2. It's good to go to reserves to re-charge the batteries & see different species in greater numbers.
The excitement of seeing birds in the local area remains though albeit a lot harder work & more
time consuming.A Redstart on Harden Moor was great to see & I enjoy seeing other local successes like your Green Sandpiper,Greenshank & a Turnstone. The Thrushes should arrive soon & may be some Waxwings again, Snow Bunting would be good on soil Hill as well.

  3. Thats right Nigel/Danny, its good to go to reserves for id purposes and study them close up but to me its like going to the zoo. As you say, its far better to find them in our own area even though its a long difficult process .
Hopefully we,ll get a Snow Bunt or two on the hill in November but last year was grim with very few sightings.
