Denholme Clough to Doe Park Reservoir

Tuesday 6th May a.m
With my last days holiday & Danny back at school I decided to do a bit of birding and headed off
to Denholme Clough with the intention of walking on to Doe Park Reservoir. It was a sunny morning
with a temperature of 11°C when I parked up.A Chiffchaff was very vocal as I headed down towards
the Clough & a Song Thrush seemed intent on having its photo taken.Through the gate into a muddy
field where there were several Cows to negotiate as I followed the path next to the stream. As I walked
along I soon heard a Green Woodpecker Yaffling loudly in the trees on the other side of the Clough. I
tried to spot it but it kept out of site, the Cows now seemed to be following me along the path, then I
heard another sound that distracted me.It was a reeling Grasshopper Warbler, which was great to hear,
then I saw a bird on a wall nearby could it be, yes it was my first sighting of a Gropper! Then it was panic
stations as I tried to get a picture.I took several before it disappeared, many were out of focus because
the camera was trying to focus on the grass behind the bird.Thankfully two or three were OK which you
can see below. The Cows had caught me up now so I moved on swiftly, it was a very pleasant walk on
to Doe Park Res & there were plenty Willow Warblers around in full voice. There was some shoreline
at the Res but I couldn't see any waders, just a few Mallards were on the water.A few Orange Tip
Butterfly's were around & just common bird species seen on my way back.

  1. This Spring is a Gropperfest! Glad you got yours and the great pics. Encouraging to know the shoreline is appearing too.

  2. Well done on the Gropper, and I thought mine were unique.
Like the shot through the archway, very artistic.

  3. Well done to get the gropper photos Danny. Although I've seen them I've never manged to get decent pics. Brilliant stuff!!!!!

  4. Thank you for your comments it's good when you're in the right place at the right time, keeps the motivation going to get out & about as much as possible .N.P.
