Old Moor

Sunday May19th
A bright & sunny day with the temperature in the mid teens at the RSPB reserve at
Old Moor near Barnsley. Here the main birds on show were the BH Gulls which were all
over the reserve in large numbers, some in nesting positions on the islands. We also spotted
a couple of LBB Gulls, there were also Gadwall,Mallard,Tufted Duck,Shoveler,Greylags,
Mute Swans & Canadas. Some of the Canadas had young Goslings which was good to see,
there were also a number of Pheasants around. As we were walking round the air was full of
bird song, some of which we spotted including Sedge Warbler,Chiffchaff,Willow Warbler,
Blackcap & Reed Bunting. Not too many waders with just a Redshank & Oystercatcher but
there were a number of distant Avocets. One of the highlights was spotting a solitary Turnstone
on one of the islands, Swallows were feeding over head.
Back at the bird feeding area a pair of Bullfinch each posed for a snap on the feeders, others
around were Goldfinch,Treesparrow & Collared Dove.
At home the local news was the return of Swifts over the village & at Hewenden Reservoir
where there was also Oystercatcher,Canadas,Pheasant & Grey Heron among others.
