Swillington Ings

 Sunday 27th October a.m.

A chilly start at Swillington with a temperature of 3° C but the sun was out and things soon warmed up.  A digger was doing work on Astley Lake which reduced the number of birds but still saw Cormorant, Shoveler, Little Egret, Teal and Tufteds.  The reed beds produced an excellent view of a Bittern along with Black-tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Gadwall, Pintail, Pochard, Gt White Egret, Lapwing, Gt Crested Grebe and Snipe.  Others included Kestrel, Cetti's Warbler, Canadas, Greylags, Grey Heron, Pied Wagtail and Mute Swan.

Hewenden Reservoir

 Thursday 24th October a.m.

A good sunny morning with a temperature of 10°C as I made my way towards Hewenden Viaduct seeing a Kestrel on a distant post.  On the dam wall of the Reservoir there were 20 Cormorants, in the fields on the other side of the Viaduct there were Pied Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Chaffinch, Meadow Pipit and Gulls.  I walked around the Reservoir seeing a Buzzard fly over, others included Teal, Moorhen, Goldfinch and Mistle Thrush.
