More from Old Moor
When the rain started at Old Moor we went into the hide next to the bird feeders
and saw a few birds here mainly Chaffinch and Bullfinch. Others we saw were
Greenfinch,Collard Dove and Tree Sparrow.

Old Moor Nature Reserve
Sunday 12th June a.m.
This morning started bight and sunny with a temperature of 12°C, but as
the morning pogressed the skies clouded over and by lunch time rain set in
for the rest of the day. We visited Old Moor Nature Reserve near Barnsley
which is run by the RSPB, the main population of birds on this site was
Black Headed Gulls. There were several hundred of these, some of the
Juvenile BH Gulls looking very similar to some wading birds. There was
also 100 plus Canadas many having chicks. Other water & wading birds we
recognised were Mute Swan,Greylag Goose,Mallards,Tufted Ducks,Pintail,
Grey Heron,Oystercatcher,Lapwing,Great Crested Grebe,Little Grebe,Avocet,
Redshank,Ringed Plover,Moorhen and Coot. In addition flying around over the
water were Swifts and Sand Martins these could also be seen entering a nesting
site built for them. Other people had seen a Black necked Grebe this is one of
many that we probably missed. We also saw many birds at the feeding station

Local Countryside Walk
Saturday 11th June a.m.
Today strarted bright and sunny although chilly at around 6°C, the temperature
quickly got up to 12°C later in the morning. We went for a walk around the local
countryside and stopped to get a picture of the House Martins we have seen a
number of times. Like Swifts this is not easy to do as they fly quickly and quite
high, however we were fortunate to spot one of their nests which meant we could
get a quick snap. The nest was built under the eves of a house from mud, the
nesting bird seemed well protected from preditors here.
We moved on over Hewenden Viaduct where there were around 30 Swifts, we also saw
about 15 Swallows and a group of 3 Rabbits nearby. As we walked nearer the Reservoir
we coud see 4 Canadas and 6 Mallards near the far bank. There was a Mute Swan on the
water and a Grey Heron perched for a while on something in the water. As we walked
under the Viaduct we saw Ragged Robin a good country plant flowering well. We also
caught sight of two Oystercatches on the Reservoir wall.
We walked through woodland hoping to here or even see a Cuckoo,but there was no sign,
wecarried on heading towards Wilsden seeing a hen Pheasent and Little Owl perched on
a wall this flew off whe mobbed by a couple of Swallowes. Our final sighting was a
Goldfinch showing well for a snap, we saw quite a few of these.

Garden Visitors
Wednesday June 8th.
Today has been a showery day with some bright intervals in between with
a temperature around 12°C.Our garden still gets frequent visitors to the bird
feeders with Great Tits visiting more frequently amongst the Bullfinch and
Goldfinch. This evening we had a Grey Squirrel looking for left overs on the
ground.

Ogden Water
Saturday 4th June a.m.
This morning started bright and sunny with the temperature when we set off to Ogden
Water 15°C. We walked along the side of the reservoir seeing 9 Canadas on the water
with one chick,there was also a Willow Warbler singing loudly and showing for a snap.
We walked up to the Giants Tooth seeing a couple of Meadow Pipits and 3 Swifts as
we came out of the woodland.We then walked back down into the woodland hearing
a Cuckoo singing loudly and catching a brief glimse as it flew past us.By now it had
clouded over and a breeze began to blow and the temperature reduced to 13°C as we
went back down to the reservoir. There were a number of Mallards round the edge and
more in the Duck feeding area two with chicks,40 Mallards in total, the Canadas were also
now in this area with their chick giving us the chance for some good snaps.
When we got home it was good to see the Peonys in the garden in flower along with the
Snow in Summer.

Holiday Snaps
Monday 31st May -Friday 3rd June.
I have been away on holiday to Somerset this last week, after a wet trip down the
weather improved through the week reaching 24°C on Thursday. We had a trip to
Chedder Gorge on Tuesday with the great scenery all around and the caves to
look at, I got a snap of a Grey Wagtail here. On Wednesday we went down to see
the Eden Project in Cornwall, I enjoyed walking through the Biomes although the
Rain forest one was very warm and humid. In the Mediterranean Biome I got a
snap of a group of three Chaffinch as we walked round. Outside in the vast gardens
I also got a snap of a Robin Juvenile which was very friendly. Before we went back
to Somerset we visited Newquay and had a walk along the beach. At the side of
where we were stopping at Burnham-on Sea was a Nature Reserve where I got
some good snaps of a Canada Goose with her chicks and a Mute Swan with four
chicks. I also got a good snap of a Herring Gull, there were quite a few of these
about.
