Redcar Tarn

Saturday 21st September a.m.
It was still cloudy on our arrival at Redcar Tarn with a temperature of 11°C, there were
plenty birds to see, we were pleased to see ten Goosanders. The Grey Heron was back on
the island, a Mute Swan was here for a while before flying off, and several Muscovy Ducks
had returned. There were now two Wigeon along with the usual birds & several Swallows were
feeding low over the water.

Saturday 21st September a.m.
Another cloudy morning with a temperature of 10°C & feeling cold with a the wind blowing.
We saw a Little Owl in its usual spot, a Kestrel flew from the banking & over the dam wall.
There were plenty Mipits & Goldfinch around but no geese, a Cormorant was on the tower
another flew over later on. The water was very quiet with just a few Mallard & BH Gull, a
Grey Heron appeared & a distant Kestel could be seen.
A fellow birder joined us on the track at the side of the reservoir, saying he had seen some
Goosanders up at Redcar Tarn so we decided to go have a look there.

were present with a couple of notable additions. We saw our first Grey Heron here as it took off

Dowley Gap to Hirst Wood

Thursday 12th September a.m.
A dull start to the day slowly brightening up with some sunshine this afternoon. A report from
my day who managed to get away from some holiday jobs to do a bit of birding.
A temperature of 15°C at Dowley Gap on arrival this morning, things started well with a Kestrel
flying over as I went along the canal footpath. Only BH Gulls & Magpies at the water works, fairly
quiet in general but as I went down to the River Aire there was a Grey Wagtail which gave me
chance for a few photos.Mallards,Moorhen & a couple of distant Jays in Hirst Wood. The
highlight of the walk was when a Kingfisher perched on a branch 5 meters away although there
was a tree between it & me so no pictures, but always good to see one of these birds.
