North Cave Wetlands

Monday18th April
With a days holiday I decided to have a run out to North Cave Wetlands where it was cool & a bit cloudy with a temperature of 9°C.I started with a walk on Dryham Lane  looking across at Dryham Ings which is a good spot for waders & there were plenty about today. These included Avocet,Little Ringed Plover,Ringed Plover,Redshank,Ruff,Lapwing,Oystercatcher and Little Egret. The Little Ringed Plover were feeling frisky & one pair mated so hopefully they will successfully be rearing chicks soon. There were plenty ducks too including Shelduck,Shoveler,Gadwall,Teal and Tufted Duck plus Greylag Geese some already with goslings. Above all this there were a good number of Sand Martins and a few Swallows, a couple of Red-legged Partridge and several Linnets were also in this area.Walking round the rest of the reserve more birds were added a couple of notables being Reed Bunting and Black Cap ending a good morning before lunch and the journey home.N.P.

Pendle Hill

Sunday 17th April a.m
We tried a new location this morning in search of a decent Ring Ouzel snap over the border in Lancashire at Pendle Hill just under 20 miles from home.We arrived after an over night frost but had sunshine and blue skies with a temperature of 0°C.The first birds seen were Pied Wagtails on a wall, then as we started to climb the hill a number of Wheatears were around keeping their distance. As we got a bit higher we started to see Ring Ouzels high near the top of the hill well out of the range of the camera. The closest we got was when one appeared up ahead on the path still along way off, we ended up with a total of eight birds which was still good.We decided to make the climb to the top which had some hail stones  covering it white which took a while for the sun to burn off.We got some good views from the top of the hill  and the trig point, Mipits and a couple of Skylarks kept us company before making our way back down.

Harden Moor & St Ives

Saturday 16th April a.m.
We were expecting a lie in this morning after seeing the weather forecast of snow and heavy rain for this morning, Wrong! We woke up to sunshine and blue skies with a temperature of 2°C.
Harden Moor
We got out of the car where we usually park and had a scan where we saw the Wheatear last week but no sign today. We saw a bird moving fast from our left low down almost like a bullet shape, we got our bins on it to see a male Ring Ouzel which then changed direction headed towards us passing just a few meters away & landing in a distant tree.Wow, what a start the camera hadn't even come out of its case yet, not that we would have got a picture the speed the bird moved. We spent the next hour trying to re-locate the bird but had no joy. There were a number of other birds around though including Kestrel, Little Owl,Sand Martin,Pied Wagtail & Lesser Redpoll. Several Willow Warblers were also seen but very flighty looking for food, not singing very often so no snaps of them today.
The only bird slow enough for a snap, Pied Wagtail

St Ives
We then moved through Harden to St Ives which is on the other side of the moor and we went to the Coppice Pond which lies in surrounding woodland. On the lake were Greylags,Canadas, nine Tufteds,
Coots nest building,Moorhen,Mallards & a Mute Swan (yellow tag 101).It was much easier to get some snaps of these. There were also a good number of Willow Warblers near the pond and a couple of Chiffchaff were singing. We spotted a couple of Jays passing through and in the distance we were surprised to hear a Tawny Owl calling. The morning was rounded off well when as we were getting into the car a couple of Nuthatches appeared in the tree next to us,needless to say the camera was back in its case so the morning ended much as it had begun.

Redcar Tarn

Monday 11th April p.m.
Some time free this afternoon so we went up to Redcar Tarn where there was some hazy sunshine with a strong blustery wind taking the edge off the 13°C temperature. There are still some Gulls here with a fair number of BH Gulls,10 LBB Gulls & a couple each of Herring & Common. The usual Canadas,Mallards,Coots & Tufted Ducks were on the water with the bonus of an Oystercatcher near the island.A Goldfinch posed well for some snaps in the trees around the Tarn as did a singing male Chaffinch.Lapwings,Jackdaw & Rook were also present.

On our return home we filled the bird feeders up in the garden and a couple of minutes later were rewarded with Goldfinch & Siskin, we were able to get close enough for some good snaps of one of the male Siskin.
