Leighton Moss Ducks & Waders
From Sunday October 14th
There were plenty Ducks to take snaps of at Leighton Moss as well as a few
waders to share with you.

Leighton Moss
Sunday October 14th
Another frosty start to the day as we set off to Leighton Moss, the temperature getting
as low as -3°C as we passed through the Yorkshire Dales and several areas of fog.On
our arrival the temperature was rising and the sun was out which meant for an enjoyable
days birding. The new hides near Morecambe bay gave us some good views of the birds
although much of the time they were distant meaning fewer snaps.Always good to see the
birds though, we even got to see several deer pass in front of one of the hides which
briefly scattered all the many Ducks.

Dowley Gap
Saturday October 13th a.m.
A late morning visit to Dowley gap near Bingley for a walk along the canal and
into Hirst Wood alongside the River Aire, the sun was shining with a temperature
of 8°C. There was a Greylag on the canal with good numbers of Mallards, in the
sewage works there were BH Gulls and Pied Wagtails.We went into the wood
seeing three Goosanders with Mallards bathing in the sun on an island in the middle
of the river, there was also a Jay making a racket behind us.We headed back getting
a good view of a Kingfisher flying along a side stream,reaching the Aqueduct we saw
more Jays and a couple of Grey Heron and a GSW fly over and there was a Robin
singing in a nearby tree.

Leeshaw & Leeming Reservoirs
Sunday October 7th a.m.
A frosty start to the day with a temperature of 4°C at Leeshaw Reservoir but very
calm with sunshine & blue skies.Quiet on the water with just two Canadas,eight
Mallards and a Grey Heron on the far bank.We counted eight male Pheasants, there
were several Meadow Pipits and a flock of c50 Carrion Crow past over.
We moved on to Leeming Reservoir where things started off well as we saw the blue
flash of a Kingfisher in the stream the reservoir overflow goes in to.Again quiet on the
water with just Mallards,BH Gulls and a Moorhen with five Swallows swooping down for
a drink .There were plenty of birds after the berries and seeds on the side of the reservoir
where we saw Robin,Song Thrush,Mistle Thrush,Goldfinch and other common species.

Swinsty Reservoir & Timble Ings
Saturday October 6th a.m.
This morning we went to the Northern end of the BOG(see link for information) area to
meet up with other members at Swinsty Reservoir.These organised walks are very
enjoyable and we get to see some good birds and benefit from the more experienced
birders with help to ID birds and listening for their calls. The walk took us alongside
the reservoir where we saw Pheasants,Grey Heron,Greylag and Cormorant. We went
through various habitats as we headed for Timble Ings seeing Ciffchaff,Redpoll and Goldcrest,
birds we don't often see.We saw many other common species as we went and on
reaching the Timble Ings area a brief glimse of three Crossbills as they flew past we then
headed back towards the village.On our way seeing a Wheatear on top of a wall this was
closely followed by a Red Kite overhead with us seeing five here and another further on.
In the village of Timble we saw several Treesparrows before heading back towards the car
park at Swinsty Reservoir,we also had a good view of Menwith Hill listening station.

Redcar Tarn
Friday October 5th p.m.
An afternoon visit to the Tarn where there was a strong blustery wind,some showers
but sunshine between them making for a nice rainbow and a temperature of 11°C.
There were more than usual Canadas & BH Gulls, also present LBB Gulls,Mallards,
Common Gulls,Tufted Duck,Coots and Pied Wagtails.
An afternoon visit to the Tarn where there was a strong blustery wind,some showers
but sunshine between them making for a nice rainbow and a temperature of 11°C.
