Cullingworth & Hewenden Reservoir

Saturday 11th July a.m.
A cloudy start this morning with some drizzle at times and a temperature of 16°C, we headed off to walk through the village & round Hewenden Reservoir.Good to see House Martin numbers rising as I'm sure chicks will have fledged by now as they zoom between the houses then glide showing their white rump so we can ID them.Walking towards the Great Northern Trail there was a flash of red, black & white as a GSW flew past, with a good number of usual species seen as well. There were good numbers of Swift over the viaduct & also Swallows as we took the path towards the reservoir.
Plenty Grey Wags were in the overflow some of them juveniles, on the water were Canadas,Mallards, Cormorant,GC Grebe & a Mute Swan.We then headed past the farm heading round the reservoir where a flash of yellow & green gave us a Green Woodpecker which landed up ahead of us & then moved into a tree. A second bird then landed on a wall, this was a juvenile which posed for a couple of snaps. The birds then flew into the field below us where we were able to see them together, looking through are snaps we think there were three birds in total a pair of adults & the Juvenile, wonderful to see them so close to home.We continued around the reservoir where other notable birds were Oystercatcher,Coot,Pied Wagtail,Willow Warbler,Linnet & Chiffchaff.

Harden Moor & Lister Park

Sunday 5th July a.m.
Harden Moor
A cloudy start as we paid a quick visit to Harden Moor where the temperature was 14°C, it was good to see the Sand Martins again as we made our way along the path next to the quarry. We saw a Green Woodpecker in the distance on a fence post & then saw it pass us flying into some trees. We heard it call several time & re-located it later in a distant tree with a second bird which looked like a juvenile.
Maybe that was why we heard so many calls as they communicated with each other, else where a couple of Whitethroats were seen one belting out a tune.Others included Willow Warbler,Blue Tits,Kestrel,Bullfinch,Pheasant & Wren.
Lister Park
On arrival at Lister Park the temperature had risen to 16°C, we headed for the lake where there were good numbers of Canadas,Tufted Duck & Mallards.Others included Greylag,Moorhen,Coots with chicks,BH Gulls & we think a couple of 3rd Summer Herring Gulls.Up in the wooded area we added Blackbird,Chaffinch,Robin & Bullfinch.

Leeshaw Reservoir

Saturday 4th July a.m.
After another night of thunder storms the morning started with fog delaying our birding until mid morning. We arrived at Leeshaw which was still misty but this was slowly clearing the temperature was 16°C.There were good numbers of Canadas,Greylags & Lapwings, Mipits were also flying around with beaks full of flies. The water level had dropped again from last week meaning the waders were further away & even harder to spot, although there was no trouble hearing the very vocal Oystercatchers. We saw three Dunlin which was a first for us at Leeshaw so we were very happy to see them, also with them were two LRPs, all of which were watchful of two Grey Herons at the waters edge.As we were watching these c50 Swifts circled overhead, there were also small numbers of House Martins & Swallows.
