Martin Mere 3

From Sunday November 11th
One of the birds I was looking forward to seeing was the Smew a small dabbling
duck from the sawbill family. The black & white males are a stunning bird and we took
quite a lot of snaps of them to try and show them at their best. The female has a brown
head with most of its body being grey,a common theme with different female species,as
is the Black & white of the males.
They are native to Scandinavia & Northern Asia but some migrate to Northwest Europe,
particularly the Netherlands. Some manage to get as far as Southeast England and there
are occasional visitors to Yorkshire, one well worth keeping an eye out for, well I live in hope.
