Bolton Abbey

Monday 1st December p.m.
With an afternoon to spare & Danny at college I thought I would try some birding & decided to head for Bolton Abbey.A dull overcast day with low cloud & a temperature of 9°C as I parked up near the Cavendish Pavillion & headed upstream alongside the River Wharfe. The first bird I saw briefly was a Dipper soon followed by a Chaffinch & a Grey Heron flying down stream & several parties of BH Gulls flew over during my afternoon walk. I soon found some Mandarin Ducks & during my visit I totalled 51 of them.Mallards & Goosanders were also on the river, with Nuthatch & Treecreeper seen as well, but the highlight came when I started watching some Chaffinch on a leafy bank.As I was scanning the flock I started to find Brambling amongst them, which is the first time we have seen this Winter visitor.I could only get a couple of record pictures of them due to the distance & poor light but delighted to finally see some Bramblings.N.P.

  1. A lovely area and a good selection of birds. Could do with some of those Brambling over this area.
